Produced by the band and Howard Redekopp (New Pornographers, Tegan & Sara, 54-40), Campfire Psalms takes the stylistic breadth established on the band’s critically-aclaimed second album, The Survival Issue, and pushes it even further. Strap yourself in as the band takes you from raunchy cowpunk raveups (Drunkard’s, Shoot at the Devil), through primitive banjo-driven hillbilly (Hey Jeb, Judas), classic soul (Can’t You See), country weepers (Punched in the Eye), burlesque gospel (Fiery Pit, Jeedis), timeless folk (Tragic Suit, Donkey Cart) to the downright unclassifiable.

A stylistic grab bag, yes. But the album retains cohesion through the powerful, smokey baritone of singer Spencer McKinnon, the depth and dimension of his lyrical narratives (by turns darkly humourous and pathos-ridden – sometimes both at once) and the telepathic interplay of a band that has performed together for more than a decade.
